I have to admit that before moving to Washington, DC almost 3 years ago I didn’t know much about our nation’s Capital. As it happens, one of the first things I learned about DC was that its people were not represented in the Senate… even the DC license plates sarcastically bare the tag line (in homage to Patrick Henry) “Taxation without Representation” - which was very confusing for me at first until I realized that the city itself had an attitude about its unfair disadvantage.

Why is it that the U.S. is the only democratic nation in the world not to give full voting rights to its Capital city!?

I don’t claim to know much about the circumstances, but from what little research I have done, it seems to have racist roots. This article at Unsought Input claims that the reason Washington, DC does not have full voting rights is because the majority of its residents are black and blacks tend to vote in favor of democrats which would put 2 democratic Senators in power which apparently is not something our government wants to deal with.

But today, CNN is reporting that things are apparently about to change for DC… maybe.
